Pacific Coast Travel

A rugged stretch of photogenic coastline on Colombia’s western fringe, the Pacific Coast feels on the edge-of-the-world.

Whether you’re a wildlife fanatic, a beach bum or a keen surfer, or just looking to get away from it all and experience some untouched natural beauty, Colombia’s Pacific Coast has something for you. Jungle hikes will see you rubbing shoulders with the dizzying array of exotic flora and fauna which make their homes here, while Whale watching and spotting nesting Turtles are fantastic activities off-shore, with superb surfing also a draw.

Colombia’s Pacific Coast is beautiful and raw, but it’s also one of the country’s lesser-visited regions. A mystery this may be, but it’s good news for those of us who are in on the secret – at times you may feel like you’re the only people for miles around. The unspoilt environment comprises sandy beaches, thick jungle, and dramatic cliffs; the mangrove-veined Utria National Park is home to critters as iconic and diverse as the Jaguar, Cougar, Giant Anteater and Sloth.

Undoubtedly, some of the region’s top attractions lie offshore; migrating Humpback Whales are yearly visitors, and the experience of watching them gather here is unforgettable. Similarly magical are the Sea Turtles who come to the beaches to nest, while the coastline here also offers the finest surfing to be found in Colombia. This is a place to get away from the stresses of modern life and back in touch with nature – some of the coastal region’s wilderness lodges have no Wi-Fi or even electricity, and they’re all the better for it.

Highlights of the Pacific Coast:

Whale watching

Few wildlife experiences are as enchanting as Whale watching, seeing some of the ocean’s mightiest beasts up close. Humpback Whales migrate along this stretch of coastline between July and November from Antarctica, to mate and give birth to their young in the warm waters. You may also have the opportunity to spot Turtles nesting on the beach.

Surfing and water sports

Everyone is partial to doing little more than lazing on a golden beach from time to time, and the Pacific Coast offers myriad opportunities to do so. However, you shouldn’t miss the opportunity to get the blood pumping with some water sports while you’re in this beautiful, unspoilt part of the world. The Pacific Coast boasts Colombia’s best surfing, with something for surfers of all levels.

Disconnecting from modern life

Sometimes, a digital detox is exactly what we need to reset and recharge, but it can be difficult to disconnect in many modern hotels. Some of the beautiful Pacific Coast lodges, though, have no Wi-Fi or electricity, meaning you can focus completely on reconnecting with nature and immersing yourself in the natural world.
